چکیده

With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer, a rich trove of early X-ray afterglow data has been collected by its on-board X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Some interesting features are emerging, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more “normal” decay component observed in a good fraction of GRBs (e.g. GRB 050128, GRB 050315, GRB 050319, and GRB 050401), and X-ray flares in nearly half of the afterglows (e.g. GRB 050406, GRB 050502B, GRB 050607, and GRB 050724). These interesting early afterglow signatures reveal valuable and unprecedented information about GRBs, including the prompt emission afterglow transition, GRB emission site, central engine activity, forward-reverse shock physics, and the GRB immediate environment. In this paper, we systematically analyze the possible physical processes that shape the properties of the early X-ray afterglow lightcurves, and use the data to constrain various models. We suggest that the steep decay component is consistent with the tail emission of the prompt gamma-ray bursts and/or of the X-ray flares. This provides clear evidence that the prompt emission and afterglow emission are two distinct components, supporting the internal origin

The Swift X-ray Telescope

The Swift Gamma-Ray Explorer is designed to make prompt multiwavelength observations of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and GRB afterglows. The X-ray Telescope (XRT) enables Swift to determine GRB positions with a few arcseconds accuracy within 100 seconds of the burst onset. The XRT utilizes a mirror set built for JET-X and an XMM-Newton/EPIC MOS CCD detector to provide a sensitive broad-band (0.2-10 ...

Swift Xrt Observations of X-ray Flares in Grb Afterglows

The Swift XRT has been observing GRB afterglows since December 23, 2004. Three-quarters of these observations begin within 300 s of the burst onset, providing an unprecendented look at the behavior of X-ray emission from GRB afterglows in the first few hours after the burst. While most of the early afterglows have smoothly declining lightcurves, a substantial fraction has large X-ray flares on ...

A : High Energy Observations of the GRB Prompt and Afterglow Emission

Swift discovered GRB 050713A and slewed promptly to begin observing with its narrow field instruments 72.6 seconds after the burst onset, while the prompt gamma-ray emission was still detectable in the BAT. Simultaneous emission from two flares is detected in the BAT and XRT. This burst marks just the second time that the BAT and XRT have simultaneously detected emission from a burst and the fi...

Observations of X-ray Flares from Gamma Ray Bursts

Swift-XRT observations of the X-ray emission from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and during the GRB afterglow have led to many new results during the past two years. One of these exciting results is that ∼1/3− 1/2 of GRBs contain detectable X-ray flares. The mean fluence of the X-ray flares is ∼10× less than that of the initial prompt emission, but in some cases the flare is as energetic as the prompt...
